I’ll say this to every single client before we ever pick up a camera: the goal of your boudoir session is not to become someone else for an afternoon, it’s to become the most confident version of yourself who already exists, but maybe just needs the right conditions to show up.
I’ve been photographing boudoir sessions in New York City for years, and I can tell you the shoots that turn out the most beautiful never come down to lighting or posing. They come down to how a woman feels walking into her own power.
So if you’ve been circling the idea of booking a boudoir session, whether it’s a gift for your husband-to-be, a birthday present to yourself, or something you’re doing purely because you want to, here are the nine tips I give every client to make sure the day actually feels as good as the photos look.

What Is a Boudoir Session, Really?
A boudoir session is a photoshoot centered entirely on you. Not on a couple, not on a family, not on an event. Just you, exactly as you are, celebrated in a way most of us never get to be.
In many cases, that can mean lingerie. It can also mean an oversized sweater, your favorite jeans, a silk robe, or nothing but a bedsheet and good light. There’s no dress code and no single “right” way to do it. What every boudoir session has in common is the intention behind it, which is to help you see yourself the way the people who love you already do.
9 Tips for a Confident Boudoir Session
1. Find a Photographer You Genuinely Connect With
Boudoir requires some vulnerability, so when choosing who to shoot with, it’s extra important to ask yourself how the photographer makes you feel, not just what their photos look like.
Boudoir sessions only work if you feel comfortable enough to laugh, get a little raw, and hand over some trust to whoever’s holding the camera. That relationship matters just as much as the final gallery, because the camera picks up on comfort (and on discomfort) every. single. time.
My top tip is to book a consultation call. Notice whether you feel at ease talking to them. If you don’t, keep looking. For what it’s worth, I consider being your hype woman for the day just as much a part of my job as pressing the shutter.
2. Romanticize the Entire Day
Don’t treat your session like an appointment squeezed between errands. Build a whole day around it.
Book the massage beforehand. Go to the bathhouse. Get your nails done. Grab your favorite coffee and treat yourself to a solo lunch before you come find me. None of this is required, but all of it changes the energy you walk in with. Turn the day into an experience you’re looking forward to, not just a box you’re checking off.
3. Give Yourself Plenty of Time
Do not rush to your own boudoir session.
Leave extra time for traffic, the subway, parking, whatever it is that could go sideways on the way to the studio. Arriving flustered and out of breath puts your nervous system in the wrong place before we’ve even started. Arriving calm, with room to spare, completely changes the energy of the entire session. Give yourself the gift of not being rushed and it will pay off tenfold in the photos.
4. Stop Scrolling Beforehand
In the days leading up to your session, stay off Pinterest and Instagram.
I definitely get the instinct. You want inspiration and you’re sure to find it in these places. But comparison is the fastest way to kill confidence right before a session that’s supposed to be about you. Your goal isn’t to recreate somebody else’s boudoir photos. It’s to end up with images that look like your own body, your own energy, your own version of beautiful.
Close the apps and trust that we’ll find it together on the day.
5. Trust Your Photographer to Direct You
You do not need to know how to pose, so don’t even bother stressing about it.
I’ll direct everything, from where your hands go to how you’re breathing in a given moment. The couples and clients who get the best photos are always the ones who let go of trying to control every angle and simply follow along. The best images happen in the moment right after you stop performing and just start existing in front of the camera.
With all of my boudoir sessions, I fully believe we’re in this together and with years of experience helping clients feel their best in front of the camera (even those who swear they’re not photogenic), I promise I’ll help find your best angles and keep the session moving without it feeling forced or corny.
6. Wear What Feels Like You
Lingerie is not a requirement for a boudoir session. It never has been!
I’ve photographed women in lace, sure, but also in an oversized sweater, a button-down borrowed from a partner, a leather jacket with nothing underneath, a pair of favorite worn-in jeans, a silk robe, and nothing but a sheet. Every single one of those sessions was beautiful, because confidence photographs better than anything you could ever put on. Wear what makes you feel like the most you version of yourself, and build the rest of your outfit choices around that same feeling.
We can always start with more coverage and go from there. Beyond confidence, my top priority is your comfort, and that starts with what you wear.
7. Move Instead of Pose
Some of the best boudoir photos I’ve ever taken happened when a client stopped posing and started moving.
I’ll definitely direct you during our time together, but don’t be afraid to have fun and dance a little, have a stretch or simply take a deep breath. Walk across the room. Laugh at something ridiculous I said (I’ll always be your ultimate hype girl). Genuine movement and real emotion make for incredible images because this is what’s going to help your body actually look like you, rather than a stiff version holding still and smiling for a camera.
8. Eat and Hydrate Beforehand
Boudoir sessions are surprisingly physical, and an empty stomach shows up in your photos as fatigue.
I know the instinct that with less clothes, you might just want a coffee and a granola bar to try and look your best. But truly, the best thing you can do for yourself is eat a real meal before you come in and drink plenty of water. Also bring a bottle with you to stay hydrated throughout the shoot!
Stretch beforehand if you can because we’re going to be moving, holding positions, laughing, and staying present for longer than you might expect. Your energy is going to read clearly in every frame so feed yourself like you’re preparing for something physical… because you actually are.
9. Remember Your Why
Before booking any boudoir session, sit with the real reason why you’re doing this.
Maybe it’s a wedding gift for your partner or a birthday present to yourself. Maybe you’re celebrating getting through a breakup, or a body you’re finally at peace with, or genuinely no reason at all beyond wanting some sexy pictures to document this moment in time.
Whatever it is, let it be enough and hold it close for your shoot. The reason doesn’t have to be for anyone else. Booking a boudoir session to celebrate yourself, on your own terms, is reason enough on its own.
Ready to Book Your Boudoir Session?
Here’s what I hope you’ll take away from all of this: a boudoir session isn’t about performing confidence you don’t feel yet. It’s about creating the conditions with the right photographer, the proper pace, and a good mindset. All of this is going to encourage the confidence that’s already in you to show up on camera.
If you’re in New York City and thinking about booking a session, I’d love to be the one behind the camera (and the hype woman in your corner) for it.
FAQs About Boudoir Photography
You do not have to wear lingerie for a boudoir session. Many clients do, but just as many choose an oversized t-shirt, a partner’s button-down, a robe, or nothing but a sheet. The goal is to wear whatever makes you feel most like yourself, not to meet some expectation of what boudoir “should” look like.
Feeling confident during a boudoir session usually comes down to preparation more than willpower. Book a photographer you genuinely connect with, give yourself plenty of time so you arrive calm, stop scrolling Pinterest and Instagram beforehand, and trust your photographer to direct you rather than trying to pose yourself. Confidence tends to show up once you stop trying to force it.
Before a boudoir session, eat a real meal, bring water, and give yourself extra time to get there without rushing. Many clients also turn the day into a full self-care experience with a massage, a manicure, or a solo lunch beforehand, since arriving relaxed changes the entire energy of the shoot.
How long a boudoir session takes depends on the photographer and the package, but most sessions run for about an hour to allow time for a few outfit changes, breaks, and enough movement to get genuine, unposed images rather than ones that feel rushed.
Boudoir sessions are booked for all kinds of reasons: a wedding gift for a partner, a birthday celebration, a way to mark a big life change, or simply because a woman wants to see herself differently. There’s no single “typical” client, and the reason doesn’t need to involve anyone but YOU!
You do not need to lose weight or change your body in any way before a boudoir session. And I truly mean that from the bottom of my heart. These sessions are meant to celebrate you exactly as you are right now, not some future or past version of yourself. Waiting for your body to look a certain way is one of the biggest reasons women put off booking a session they’d otherwise love. If you’re even considering it, I highly recommend taking the leap. Your future self is going to thank you.
Boudoir photos are private by default. A good photographer will never share, post, or use your images without your explicit permission, and you should always ask about a studio’s privacy policy before booking if this is a concern. Any boudoir imagery you see on my website or social media has been posted with written permission from past clients and is in no way a requirement for anyone.
